Teen Advisory Board For Teens...From Teens By Caitlin Giles - ACT Pres.
It’s hard to believe that Abstinent Community Teens (ACT) has been together for almost a year, but looking back we have had quite a busy few months! We’ve been involved with a handful of organizations such as First Things First, Hope Unlimited, Channels of Love, and Y-CAP. Aside from our service around the community, you may have heard a teen board member on Power 94 or seen us at Why Know’s annual fund raising banquet. The teen board isn’t just about community service, we also have meetings once a month to get together and talk about upcoming events, give our input on new programs at Why Know, and just have fun and support each other. The teen board’s favorite activity was definitely the retreat we went on in March. We spent a weekend at Camp Ocoee having fun, enjoying the outdoors, and planning for the upcoming year.
Since the end of the year is starting to sneak up on us, the teen board will be losing members as they
leave their high school days behind. We spent a lot of time revising the application and coming up with a more detailed one to be sure that the new members we select will share the same goals held by ACT. Any students who will be in grades 9-12 for the 2008-2009 schoolyear are encouraged to apply. Just print an application or pick one up at Why Know’s office. I strongly encourage anyone who is interested to apply because it really is a blast!
I personally decided to join the teen board because I wanted to make a difference. As teenagers, our abilities to accomplish great things in the community are sometimes underestimated. ACT has given me a means through which I can serve the community and make a difference in the lives of others. Not only does the teen board involve giving; I am on the receiving end, too. I benefit in my membership with ACT because it has provided me with strong mentors and a solid group of friends with the same focus as myself. The teen board has given me the motivation and inspiration to chase my dreams and think big.
